It’s time for Major League Hacking’s (MLH) annual Local Hack Day: Learn, a worldwide celebration of learning. Do you have a framework that you have wanted to try? Or perhaps you just want to have fun with friends and compete to earn points for your community? Join us for a global day of learning on October 24 to pick up new coding skills and show off how much you have learned on the leaderboard. MLH is bringing together the entire global community online for a day of fun.

Why participate in Local Hack Day: Learn?

It’s a jam-packed week of workshops and skills to apply to your school projects, internships, career, and beyond. Local Hack Day: Learn helps you set aside time to explore new tools and technologies. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to coding or an experienced developer. This hack day is for everyone. With beginner-friendly content and talks from community leaders, there’s sure to be something you will find interesting.
A few things that I am looking forward to learning include:

  • Making a Spark AR filter with Chris Gu
  • Hearing from GitHub Campus Experts, Shreya Prasad and Arsalan Khattak, who will be doing technical interviews and discussing JavaScript
  • Testing my knowledge of security in a round of capture the flag (beginners are welcome)

Besides opportunities to win all sorts of hacker swag, every student who attends a Local Hack Day: Learn gets free access to the GitHub Education Pack. The Pack now offers over $200,000 worth of tools and training to every student developer, anywhere where GitHub is available.

Do you want to increase your odds of winning swag? Get your friends in the game, and create a Guild. Every time you participate in a workshop in the week leading up to Local Hack Day: Learn (and the day itself), you’ll earn points for your team. Organizing Guilds can be an excellent way for community leaders to participate in the event and get your friends on the leaderboard.

What will I learn?

You can attend beginner-friendly workshops on new coding languages and frameworks, learn how to create apps for smart home devices, jump into the world of blockchain, or learn how to create secure applications. You’ll also hear from GitHub Campus Experts, fellow hackers, and industry professionals. See you there!

We’re proud to support Local Hack Day: Learn again this year, and we can’t wait to see you there. Spread the word about Local Hack Day: Learn by using the hashtag #LocalHackDay on Twitter, and don’t forget to mention us @GitHubEducation so we can follow along.

Happy hacking!
