You can now create up to 1,000 cost centers per enterprise, up from 500. Enterprises that model hundreds or thousands of business units, departments, or product groups can now represent that full structure in GitHub, instead of exporting usage data into a homegrown system to fill the gap.

This is the scale layer under the cost center controls rolling out in the near future. The more business units you model as cost centers, the more each one needs to be governed on its own. Three controls make that practical at this size:

  • Assign enterprise teams to cost centers, so membership follows your team structure and automatically stays current. See the enterprise teams announcement.
  • Set a cost center user-level budget, one per-user AI credit cap that applies to every member. See the cost center user-level budgets announcement.
  • Cap a cost center’s use of included AI credits, so each group stays within the share that its own licenses fund. This control rolls out June 29.

Together, these let you attribute, allocate, and cap Copilot spend across up to 1,000 business units without managing thousands of individual entries.

To get started, go to your enterprise’s Billing and licensing settings and open Cost centers.
