Two ways you can experience GitHub Universe

You may have heard that GitHub Universe is back and more robust than ever, with two great ways to experience everything the global developer event has to offer: an in-person experience at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, and a dynamic virtual experience from wherever you call work or home. We’ve walked through how to convince your boss to send you, so now let’s take a deeper look into what the event on November 9 and 10 will actually entail.

Why does GitHub Universe exist?

GitHub Universe has always been a non-traditional tech conference. We take our customers and our platform very seriously, but we like to have (a lot) of fun when we gather together. So every Universe has touches of whimsy and delight that make it a fully engaging, multi-sensory experience. We’re not here just to put our products on a pedestal, but rather to bring together our global community–all of you!—in one place and at one time to celebrate. That’s developers, open source maintainers, enterprise decision makers, students, educators, startups, and everyone in between! Universe gives us a glimpse into everything we can achieve together.

Is it just us, or did that building sprout octopus tentacles?!

The breadth of topics and what you can learn about at Universe is like none other. Where else can you watch the CEO of a company make a sandwich during his talk, hear from an NGO about how they use open source technologies, and meet your next project management tool, all in the course of a single conference?

You’ll walk away from Universe truly understanding the impact and reach of the GitHub platform, with fresh ideas and inspiration on how you can further your own projects, companies, and careers.

The in-person experience

Like many of you, we’re hungry for face-to-face interaction after a couple of years of virtual events. So, we’re excited to come together in San Francisco and start matching faces with GitHub handles! At YBCA, you’ll be able to experience the main stage and other keynote sessions live, network with GitHub staff, leadership and community, see product demos and get hands-on in our demo kiosks, and bring your technical questions to the “Ask GitHub” booth. Plus, you’ll have a chance to pick up new gear and limited edition items at the IRL GitHub Shop!

Early bird tickets to attend in-person are available now until October 15.

The virtual experience

If you’re not able to make it to San Francisco, have no fear! The Universe virtual experience is not an afterthought but rather a fully-baked second way to experience the goodness of the event. You can catch compelling online content during the conference days and also on-demand afterwards. If you tune in live all day, you’ll be able to hop in and out of all four tracks to choose your own adventure. There will be a mix of long- and short-form talks, and you can engage with each other through GitHub Discussions during every session to interact with other attendees, speakers, and even GitHub product and customer service representatives.

It’s free to register for the virtual Universe experience.

The four content tracks

No matter who you are, whether you’re a developer, a student, a startup founder, an open source contributor or maintainer, or a CISO or other enterprise decision maker, there’s something for you in one or all of the Universe content tracks.

  • In the Cloud track, you’ll get a glimpse of what real productivity can look like when you empower developers with instantly-on, state-of-the-art workstations in the cloud and see how GitHub enables better collaboration and speedier, more secure releases.
  • In the Security track, you’ll hear how some of the world’s most successful teams work together to ship secure software at scale without slowing down innovation and learn how you can better secure your software development lifecycle. You’ll get up-to-date on the latest trends impacting your security posture and walk away with best practices for managing risk and remediating vulnerabilities.
  • In the AI track, you’ll see how GitHub, organizations, and the community are making use of machine learning to build solutions to today’s most interesting problems. Additionally, you’ll learn how you can use GitHub to improve your developer workflow.
  • In the Community track, we’ll highlight inspiring software development teams from around the world, giving you lessons you can apply to your own work. You’ll learn how you can get involved in open source, the backbone of the world’s software, no matter where you are in your coding journey or what size company you work at, and better understand its impact on your business and on the world.
