Give back to open source projects during the month of October! This year, we’re encouraging more than code contributions: writing, design, advocacy, and financial donations.
Hacktoberfest is back for its ninth year! Our friends at DigitalOcean host an annual celebration encouraging open source contributions during the month of October. We all use and depend on open source to power our digital world. In the past year alone, we saw over 2.6 billion contributions on GitHub! Hacktoberfest is a great way to give back to the open source projects we all depend on. ✨
While code contributions are top of mind when it comes to open source, projects often desperately need non-code contributions like writing, design, advocacy, and financial contributions.
This year, consider writing some docs, designing a logo, or scheduling a few tweets to support your favourite open source community. You don’t have to be a technical expert to make a difference!
You can contribute to several GitHub projects participating this year, including GitHub Docs. If you’ve ever wanted to contribute to GitHub’s open source documentation, now is your chance!
The GitHub Social Impact and DigitalOcean Social Impact teams are working together to amplify Hacktoberfest 2022 volunteer opportunities to digital public goods (DPGs). If you’re looking to contribute to projects that work towards a more equitable world, check out our list of participating DPGs.
There are already over 90k projects on GitHub participating in Hacktoberfest this year!

Thank you so much for your contributions to open source. It makes a real difference for these communities and projects! Happy Hacktoberfest!
