Applications are now open for the MLH Fellowship: GitHub Externship Track! Building on our work with the Major League Hacking team, the new fellowship track will offer students the opportunity to support and maintain the codebases that run GitHub itself with the real-world projects, training, and community mentorship.

Students in the MLH community use GitHub every day in their coursework, hackathon projects, and by utilizing and contributing to open source. Now, through the fellowship, students will have the opportunity to contribute to GitHub itself and get paid while they learn. By working on both open source and innersource parts of GitHub, students will have a chance to improve the experience of tens of millions of developers around the world.

“MLH has been working with GitHub for seven years to teach early career developers around the world how to collaborate on their code in a meaningful way using industry-leading tools. With the addition of the MLH Fellowship: GitHub Externship Track, we’ll get to empower the next generation of developers in building those same industry-leading tools with the opportunity to work on GitHub’s core codebases. It’s the experience I wish I had when I was starting out.”

– Mike Swift, CEO & Co-Founder at MLH

“When I joined GitHub as an intern, I felt like an engineer on the team. They were so welcoming and I felt supported everyday. They were always willing to pair or talk through problems with me. From day one, I was the one driving what my internship looked like—ranging from what projects I get to work on to what my work days look like. By the end of my internship, I shipped a feature that I was super passionate about, which I built from start to finish. At the onset, it was a feature I felt very intimidated by, but with the guidance from my amazing manager and team I was able to ship it successfully.”

– Stephanie Giang, Software Engineer, GitHub

Applications are now open and will be accepted until September 13 at 11:59pm ET. We encourage everyone to apply, but are especially seeking applicants with experience writing Ruby/Rails, C++, C#, Go, JavaScript, and/or with functional programming languages like Haskell or OCaml.
